Mastering the Field: The Essential Dos and Don'ts of Airsoft

Airsoft is a hobby built on honor and good sportsmanship. When you're hit by a BB, the game relies on you to call yourself out. It's a social and fun sport, but sometimes players forget these key points, which can ruin the experience for everyone.

Whether you're new to the field or an experienced player, it's important to know the rules. If you've only played in a backyard before, some of these might be familiar, but they are all essential for a good time. Here are some of the most important dos and don'ts for playing airsoft.

  1. (DO) Safety, Safety, Safety

When you head out to the field, prioritize your safety above all else. Always wear ANSI Z87.1 rated eye protection—you can't replace your eyes, so protecting them is non-negotiable. In safe zones, make sure to use a barrel sock on your airsoft replica to prevent any accidental discharges from harming someone. Finally, when you're in public, always transport your airsoft guns in a gun bag or case. This prevents them from being seen as a dangerous item and helps you avoid unnecessary alarm.

  1. (DO) Follow the fields rules

While most airsoft fields share similar rules, it's crucial to pay close attention to the specific regulations of the field you're playing on. The FPS (feet per second) or joule limits for airsoft guns are non-negotiable and can vary between locations. Always listen carefully during the pre-game briefing. This is where you'll learn about safety zones, respawn points, and how to interact with other players. Following the rules not only keeps everyone safe but also helps you better understand the community and the game's flow.

  1. (DO) Call your Hits

Calling your hits is a fundamental part of airsoft. It's a matter of honor, and if you're ever in doubt about whether a BB hit you, it's best to simply call it. If you find that the gear you're wearing is too thick to feel hits, consider switching to something lighter.

  1. (DO) Practice good sportsmanship

Regardless of whether you win or lose, the main goal is to have fun. Always congratulate the opposing team on a well-played game, shake hands, and thank the referees. Being a good sport and treating everyone with respect—no matter their skill level—helps create a positive and welcoming community for all players.

  1. (DONT) Remove your eye protection

Sometimes your eye protection will fog up during a game, and it might seem like a good idea to take it off to vent. It's not. Taking your eye pro off, even for a second, puts you at risk of serious injury. Instead, immediately find a referee. They can assist you safely and help you regain your visibility without the risk of getting hit by a BB.

  1. (DON’T) Argue over hits

If you believe someone isn't calling their hits, report it to a referee. Don't take matters into your own hands or confront the player directly, as this can escalate the situation. It's the staff's job to handle these issues. Remember, you're there to have fun and stay safe, so let the referees do theirs.

  1. (DON’T) Forget to take breaks

You can play every game mode, but it's important to take breaks to hydrate and relax. Don't forget to pack essentials like water and a snack to keep yourself refreshed. Taking a game or two off to let your body rest won't make you miss out on the fun; it'll ensure you have the energy to enjoy the rest of the day.

  1. (DON’T) Overshoot

Once a player calls their hit, you must stop shooting at them. Overshooting—continuing to fire at a player who is already out—is poor sportsmanship and can be seen as an act of aggression. Always respect the hit call and go after other targets.

By prioritizing safety, following the rules, and practicing good sportsmanship, you'll ensure that every airsoft game is a fun and honorable experience for everyone involved.
